How to organise your belongings before moving house

By Raidan · Makers of WorthOf

A moving inventory helps you decide what is coming with you and where it belongs in your next home. Make the list before packing so you can review your belongings while they are still easy to see.

List belongings before packing boxes

Start with furniture, appliances and electronics in each room. Use clear item names and record the room they currently belong to. Keep a separate packing checklist for box numbers, destinations and anything that needs special handling.

  • Walk through each room, including cupboards and storage areas.
  • Decide which items to keep, sell, donate or recycle.
  • Check large furniture against the space in the next home.
  • Keep everyday essentials accessible during the move.

Separate the inventory from the packing plan

Your home inventory describes what you own. Your packing plan describes how it will travel. Keeping those purposes clear means you can continue using the inventory long after the last box is unpacked.

For example, record a desk as a belonging in your study, then note its moving destination on your packing checklist. After moving, update the inventory to reflect its new location.

Set up a lasting inventory in your next home

Once you unpack, review each room and update any belongings you sold or gave away. Add purchase details for new furniture while the information is still handy.

WorthOf organises belongings by property and room, with purchase costs and estimated values you assign. Use it for the lasting home inventory alongside a separate checklist for packing and moving tasks.
